F.I.S.H.: A New Approach to Food Insecurity in L.A.
SELAH’s programs create connections that foster a community capable of supporting neighbors on their path to housing. Many of those connections start with a nutritious meal, which is why we commit to serving food to everyone who comes through our doors.
Unfortunately, the number of people coming through our doors is increasing every year. In 2023, about 8,500 people visited a drop-in program at SELAH. In 2024, that number rose to more than 13,000 people.
Partnerships are key to helping us meet the growing need and provide more and more nutritious food to our participants.
So in 2024, we we helped launch a radically collaborative initiative called the Food Insecurity Shared Hub…aka F.I.S.H! Together with the Daughters of Charity, Every Day Action, Casa Milagrosa (Depaul USA-LA), and Meals on Wheels St. Vincent, F.I.S.H. is both reducing food waste in L.A. through rescues and allowing groups like SELAH to feed more neighbors.
Over the next few months, hundreds of volunteers spent countless hours cleaning, building, organizing, and painting the F.I.S.H. warehouse. And in February 2025, we had our first official open house!
