Meet Cindy!

“The reason I am going is to be around people. I love the energy I get there. Thank you. You always make me feel good and I'm glad to be part of the community!”
Cindy is a housing-insecure senior who frequents both Wednesday and Saturday SELAH on-site programs. She comes to our programs for food and community. Recently, Cindy has struggled with feeling safe in her temporary living situation and SELAH has stepped in to support her efforts to find a new placement in partnership with the LGBT Center. As Cindy’s relationship with SELAH has deepened, so has her desire to give back. Cindy now regularly volunteers to be a greeter at the SELAH programs she attends – checking people in, welcoming participants into the space, helping new folks get familiar with the programs and services offered. This work has reinvigorated Cindy and reminded her of how valuable she is in a community. Finding such joy in volunteering with SELAH has inspired Cindy to look for part time work in other places in the neighborhood!
Update 1: In late October 2024, Cindy moved into permanent supportive housing!
Update 2: In late June 2025, Cindy passed away peacefully at her home.
